Why a specialist orthodontist?

Because experience and expertise count

Straightening teeth and creating great smiles is what Specialist Orthodontists do, all day, every day.

There is a lot more to the perfect smile than straight teeth. For children, managing the shape and development of their jaws can be vitally important for improving facial aesthetics and ensuring the best possible results. It is this that Specialist Orthodontists are trained to do.

When researching orthodontists for your child, it’s advisable you look for a Specialist Orthodontist whose expertise and work reflects the importance of facial aesthetics. After all, you will be putting your child’s most precious asset, their face, in their hands.

And for adults, treatment can often be more complicated, not less, because the jaws have stopped growing. A Specialist Orthodontist is the professional best placed to achieve your perfect smile, whether with Invisalign or cosmetic braces fixed to the outside of the teeth or totally invisible braces on the inside of the teeth.

Here at Walpole, both Dr Orton-Gibbs and Dr Slattery are consultant trained (which means not only are they Specialist Orthodontists, but have received an extra 3 years consultant training). So, no matter how complicated the arrangement of yours or your child's teeth, you can be totally confident that we have the experience to provide the very best result for you.

The difference between a Dentist and Specialist Orthodontist

In the UK, all dentists are permitted to provide orthodontics, and can even call themselves ‘orthodontists’. In contrast, ‘Specialist Orthodontists’ having first qualified as dentists then undertake three years of extra full-time training to gain an MOrth, which is required to be registered as a ‘Specialist’ with the General Dental Council.

Specialist Orthodontists may also undergo two or three further years of training in treating the most difficult orthodontic cases to become a hospital consultant. If you choose a Specialist Orthodontist, you can be confident they will have had the training needed to ensure you receive the best possible orthodontic care.
